Project title: Cancer epidemiology: Prevention and early diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancer

An opportunity has arisen for a 4-year PhD studentship within the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London funded by Cancer Research UK.

Colorectal cancer is a major cause of morbidity and premature mortality in the UK and internationally: estimated to be the fourth most common cancer and second most common cause of cancer death in the UK. Cancers of the stomach and oesophagus are less common in the UK than colorectal cancer but have very high fatality rates, which has led Cancer Research UK to prioritise research on these cancers. There is an urgent need to reduce the burden of gastrointestinal cancers by better understanding risk factors and improving screening and early detection. This epidemiologic research aims to investigate risk factors for oesophageal, stomach and colorectal cancer incidence, and/or investigate ways to optimise colorectal cancer screening and surveillance strategies.

Requirements

Applicants must be UK/Ireland nationals or have permanent leave to remain in the UK and should hold a first or upper‐second class honours degree or equivalent in a life sciences or health‐related discipline. A Master’s degree in epidemiology/public health/statistics and/or experience in cancer epidemiology is desirable.

Funding is provided for 48 months (full time), and includes course fees at the Home/Ireland rates and a tax‐free annual stipend of £23,000. Funding for overseas fees is not provided.
